Lamaland Homestay

A unique cultural Nepali experience

Lamaland Homestay offers an exciting opportunity to visit true rural Nepal. You will live amongst Tamang villagers and have the opportunity to engage in their way of life and culture. The homestay is based in the village of Managau, approximately 1700m above sea level within the hill region of Nepal, around 3 hours east of Kathmandu.   The scenery is simply stunning, and the area is virtually untouched by western civilisation.

The word Lama means teacher in Tibetan and Managau is a Tamang Buddhist village of around 20 family homes. The villagers are predominantly subsistence farmers but undertake seasonal work in the trekking and tourism industry.  The homestay is the family home of Binay Lama, a highly experienced trekking and tourist guide and founder of the Sacred Himalaya Trekking Company.

In 2015 the village and surrounding area were devastated by the earthquakes that destroyed so many homes and killed many. The village was rebuilt with aid from Binay’s many friends from around the world. The introduction of solar power was an added bonus for the villagers. The concept of homestay came out of the village rebuild and Binay’s family home was purposely rebuilt with homestay in mind, an ideal opportunity to enhance village life and provide much needed income from visitors. Anyone who likes the concept of homestay, experiencing first hand life in a rural Nepali village, will love this opportunity.

The property is a two-storey family home with five comfortable well-lit guest rooms with soft floorings and comfortable beds.  Inside there is a western toilet together with a hot shower.

Lamaland Homestay offers an all-inclusive experience with all meals being provided. There is a well-stocked village shop opposite the homestay including the sale of snacks and drinks. Local crafts can also be purchased. The home has fantastic views of the surrounding rolling hills and the high Himalaya beyond.

Lamaland Homestay is the perfect place for rest and relaxation, but guests are invited to take guided walks around the area to visit surrounding Buddhist and Hindu villages within the district and to fully participate in village life.

There is no obligation, but guests are able to have the opportunity to work with the villagers on the land and with the animals.  Farm based experiences are seasonally dependent, but examples may include ploughing fields, sowing and harvesting crops, grass cutting for live-stock feed and bedding, animal husbandry, corn grinding, flour making and many others.

Lamaland Homestay has a separate kitchen where guests can learn to prepare local food (no obligation). Other opportunities include visiting and even helping out in the local schools and engaging with the wonderful Nepali children.  A visit can also be arranged to the newly built locally run health centre.

Guest transportation from Kathmandu to the village is by road.  From Kathmandu to the valley floor beneath the village takes around 2 and a half hours either by tourist bus or jeep.  Guests can reach the village from the valley by a guided walk (3 hours) or by jeep (around 50 minutes).

The duration of the homestay is totally flexible, but we would encourage guests to stay at least 3 nights to experience all that the village has to offer.

Lamaland Homestay is a perfect example of eco-tourism. A chance to enjoy a wonderful, off the beaten track tourist experience and to support the local Tamang community.
